I first saw this movie many years ago after hearing from everyone that it's so romantic. After watching it I was convinced that I missed some pivotal scene in the beginning where it was made clear why these people liked each other in the first place. I just didn't get it. I watched it again tonight, thinking that I would understand better now that I've had more experience with relationships. I understand it even LESS.
Here are my problems with it.
-Why did she kiss him in the first place? They had exchanged like 10 sentences, and she seemed to be almost completely indifferent to him. And then all of the sudden she just KISSES him? Do people DO that? Is that romantic? What am I missing here?
-She's genuinely inconsiderate and even mean to him! She lies to him or belittles him or yells at him every time they interact. How is that romantic or even OKAY?
-He LETS her be horrible to him, and then ends up being the one to apologize! He constantly lets her walk all over him and never really calls her out on it. The one time he comes close to it, he ends up accepting her pitiful excuse and she's never held accountable! What is wrong with this guy? NOT OKAY!
-All of his friends think he's an idiot when he finally gets the guts to tell her he can't have a future with her. Their only reason for this seems to be that she is a famous movie star and so he should jump at the chance to be with her. GROSS!
What is the message of this movie? That we should put up with an indeterminate amount of crap in order to be with someone we consider out of our league? That's the complete opposite of romance to me!

Penny for...
--Why has no one nominated me for "What Not to Wear" yet? I think it would be great to fly to New York and have them fuss over my hair and makeup and tell me what clothes to buy. YOU KNOW I DESERVE THIS: I wear sweats whenever I can possibly get away with it. Stacy and Clinton would be appalled.
--I had a dream that I was THE Harry Potter last night. It was a scary but wonderful dream. Voldemort was chasing us around a countryside that looked suspiciously like some places in World of Warcraft.
--There is no getting around it: packing is just...the worst.
--I want to be Joanna Newsom's best friend. I think I'll write her a letter telling her why we should be friends. I'm sure that she wouldn't be creeped out at all. I feel like I should tell her that her hometown is in my mission, which I've been calling "The Joanna Newsom Mission" in my head.
--Why is EVERY SINGLE GUY in "16 and Pregnant" THE WORST PERSON IN THE UNIVERSE? I just want to write them a letter so I can tell them how much they suck.
--I am in a letter-writing mood.

Where I've been for the past month.
I'm at the very end of my first practicum, and I could just cry. In the elementary education program we do two practicums, which are like student teaching except that they're only a month long. I have become so attached to my second graders, it's insane. I just love every one of them. They are endlessly entertaining and wonderful. For instance:
-- The time that I was teaching a phonics lesson and a kid raised his hand. Thinking he was going to ask a question perhaps about the long e vowel sound, I called on him and I got, "Um, Ms. Foster? I'm not afraid of dead people."
-- The first day that I was at the elementary school I told the kids a few things about myself. When I was in the middle of telling them about my family, a girl raised her hand to inform me that, "One time, we put a dummy out on a bench and it got stolen."
-- The girls are sweet as pie. They are always blowing me kisses, giving me big hugs throughout the day, and holding my hands, four or five of them at a time. When they have free time, they color me pictures and write me stories. Little girls are just the best.
-- I had to miss one day because I was very sick. When I came back, 9 or 10 of my students had made me get well cards. One of my favorites: "Dear miss. foster i am mad you are not hir today but I am still happy." Another favorite: "Dear miss foster pleas get better. it makes me sad at my house. i cry to my house i cry to my mom. pleas get better." I laughed so hard!
--Yesterday everyone was sitting on the rug while my mentor teacher was teaching. One little girl decided that she no longer wanted to be sitting, but they obviously aren't allowed to walk around while their teacher is instructing. To get around this rule, she got up on her knees, grabbed her ankles and pulled them up to her waist, then walked all around the rug on her knees. No one seemed to find this funny or unusual except me. I didn't stop her and this continued for several minutes.
And so on. I have laughed and smiled every single day. Second graders are such funny little creatures and they don't even know it. I've also loved the opportunity I've had to become a better teacher. I've learned so much and loved every minute of it.

NEWS!
All right blogosphere, it's official. Offish! A FISH!
I'm going on a mission. My papers are on their way to wherever it is they go and I should hopefully hear back in two or three weeks about where I'll be serving.
See here to find out more about the church I'm serving a mission for if you're curious. I'll be gone for 18 months starting in January or February, March at the latest hopefully.
Yes, in those clothes.

An impossibility.
How does anyone expect me to get any homework done when there is so much cool stuff on the internet?

Happy Conference Weekend!
General Conference was so good this weekend. I'm usually only about 40% awake during the morning sessions so I miss some great stuff. But this time I made sure I was totally awake and alert for all four sessions, journal and pencil at the ready. And I really got something out of it--I felt like some of the messages were so personal. I hope everyone loved it as much as I did.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, General Conference is a semi-annual meeting the LDS church has where they broadcast some of our leaders giving talks about things they feel we need to hear. If you're at all curious about my religion, I'd encourage you to go here.
